     It’s ok for me. Based on Kalki’s novel there should not be any deviation. It’s highly difficult for any director to visualize with novel’s taste. Maniratnam did his best. But, peoples going with high expectation may be disappointed.

   ஐயா, நீங்கள் இன்னும் பார்க்கவில்லையா?

   I finally saw Ponniyin Selvan PS I. I felt it was okay but felt lack of depth in characterisation, missing of nativity, and not able to jell with the songs. Might have been difficult for viewers who had not read the book. Strange to see that they did not really display the Chola Tiger flag. However, liked it for showcasing our history and reviving the interest on the moovendhars.

   The other negative I felt was Aishwarya Rai looked old for Nandini and the non portrayal of the simmering tension that existed between Nandini and Kundavai.

   I have to admit that my imagination while reading PS the first time in my 7th std holidays was not realized. I have felt it like this in many of the novel turned movies like LOTR, HPotter, etc. But on the whole, liked it to being to screen the grandeur we felt reading Kalki’s story.

   We have been reading about making PS movie for many years and.also TV series, but nothing had come. I remember watching Ponniyin Selvan as a drama in YMCA Madras around 1997-98 (by Magic Lantern group). That was the first time they tried. Actor Nasser played Aditha Karikalan. I also liked that.

   I would greatly look to someone making PS as a web series like the current LOTR in Amazon as the TV media will allow real development of characters a nd we can have side stories too and the canvas an be greatly expanded. Financially I think it is doable, but will qe really get it? Also Kadal Pura by Sandilyan would be good.

     பெரிய பழுவேட்டரையர் அறுபது பிராயம்(+) நிரம்பியவர். அவர் விரும்பிய நந்தினியை படத்தில் சரியாகக் காண்பித்திருப்பதாக எனக்குப் பட்டது. நந்தினியையே ஆதித்தனும் விரும்பினான் என்பதும் சரியாகத்தான் (based on characters look and feel) இருக்கிறது.

     //Strange to see that they did not really display the Chola Tiger flag. // – படத்தில் இந்த மாதிரித் தவறுகள் இருக்கின்றன. ஆனால் போட்ட காசை வசூல் செய்ய மாநிலம் தாண்டிப் படத்தை வெற்றிபெற வைக்கவேண்டும். ரொம்பவும் வெளிப்படையாக கர்நாடக மன்னனைப் போரிட்டு வென்றான், ஆந்திரா ஓட்டம் பிடித்தது, வட இந்தியா புறமுதுகிட்டது என்றெல்லாம் காட்டி, இந்தப் படத்தைத் தமிழ்நாட்டுக்கு அப்பால் கொண்டுசெல்லமுடியாது.

     //simmering tension that existed between Nandini and Kundavai.// – இந்த stageல் இதைக் காண்பித்திருக்க முடியாது, அரசன் வலுவாக இல்லை, ஆதித்தன் தஞ்சை வர இஷ்டப்படவில்லை, கோட்டை, நிதி பழுவேட்டரையர்கள் கட்டுப்பாட்டில் இருக்கிறது. அருள்மொழி இலங்கையில். அதனால் முள் மேல் நடப்பது போன்ற நிலைமைதான் குந்தவைக்கு.

     நிச்சயம் நாவல் படிக்காமல் படம் பார்க்கும் ரசிகனுக்கு பல இடங்களில் ஒன்றும் வாய்ப்பு குறைவு. என்னடா இண்டெர்வல்ல படத்தை ‘சுபம்’ போட்டுவிட்டார்களே என்பதுபோலத் தோன்றும். பாஹுபலி1 ஐவிட, இந்த விஷயத்தில் பொன்னியின் செல்வன் பகுதி 1 மோசம்தான்.

     எப்படி விஷுவலைஸ் பண்ணியிருக்காங்க, தற்போதைய இளைஞர்களைக் கவரும்படியான இசை, பிரம்மாண்டமாக ஸ்க்ரீனில் காண்பித்திருப்பது என்பதுதான் அவர்களின் கடும் உழைப்பைக் காண்பிக்கிறது. ஈகோ இல்லாமல் நடித்த நடிகர்களையும் பாராட்டவேண்டும்.

     /Kadal Pura by Sandilyan// Amazon etc// – சீசன்சீசனாக, மிகவும் செலவழித்து எடுக்கணும். அதற்கான audience நிச்சயம் கிடையாது. (ஆங்கிலத் தொடர்கள் போல). தமிழ்த் தொடர்கள் போல எடுத்தால்……. கதையே இருக்காது.

       Puthiyavan Sir, no problem. I always read your posts/ responses with interest in the blog and so, no issues. My thoughts on what you had written.

       1) Age – As per the characterization of Kalki and what I interpreted when reading PS was: Peria Paluvettayar (+ Sundara Chola): 60+; Aditha Karikala: 30-35; other key characters (Vandhiadevan, Arulmozhi Varman, Nandini, Kundavai, Vanathi): 25-30 with Arulmozhi and Vanathi being younger than Vandhiyadevan and Kundavai. Everyone talks behind PP and chastise him in private that he married a young girl and is besotted by her. So, the age of Nandini has to be much lower than PP. I know that Vikram, 50+, played the role of AK, but somehow felt that Aishwarya was showing her true age.

       2) Simmering tension between Kunadavai and Nandini – I thought in the book, we could always feel the tension and sparks flying indirectly when these two women meet.

       3) Chola Tiger Flag – There are many instances of the flag coming up in background but it will not be shown clearly although Pandya flag was shown clearly. The only reason for avoiding it, I thought, was the LTTE angle, but I could be wrong too.

       I did not have any issues about not showing the Kingdoms north of Tamilagam although they do show AK defeating Rashtrakutas (Karnataka/ Andhra).

       4) On the whole, I enjoyed and happy to see something that we had longed for to see for many many years come to the silver screen, the interest that it has generated on our history, the magnificence of Cholas, bringing so many families to the theatre after a long time. I know it is difficult to accomplish what Maniratnam has done and hats off to him and his team.

       5) My desire is to see PS and other historical novels like Lord of the Rings TV series as it will give space for character development. It is just a wish. I know it may not happen.

         மிக்க நன்றி கணபதி… புலிக்கொடி-வித்தியாசமான, உண்மையாயிருக்கக்கூடும் சிந்தனை. இந்தக் கோணம் எனக்குத் தோன்றவேயில்லை. பாராட்டுகள். வீட்டை அடுத்துள்ள காம்ப்ளக்ஸில், 150-180 ரூ டிக்கெட் கிடைத்தால் இன்னொருமுறை படத்தைப் பார்ப்பேன். முதன்முறை பார்த்தபோது ஏற்பட்ட பிரமிப்பில் சிலவற்றைச் சரியாக கவனித்திருக்க மாட்டேன்.

           நன்றிகள், புதியவன் ஐயா. நானும் இன்னும் ஒரு முறை பார்க்கவேண்டும். எனது தாயாரை அழைத்து செல்ல வேண்டும். அவர்கள் பைண்ட் செய்து வைத்திருந்த கல்கி இதழில் வந்த பொன்னியின் செல்வன் புத்தகத்தை தான் சிறு வயதில் முதலில் படித்தேன்.

           இந்த திரைப்படம் amazon primeல் சில மாதங்களில் வருகிறது. அதன் பின்பு அடிக்கடி பார்க்க முடியம்.

   ok. Just for photography and direction the movie requires a second view also.
